Late last year we focussed on leaders and types of leaders. We discussed issues world leaders face. In particular, international problems such as war, the economy and environment.

One thing we learned about leaders is that there are different types. We debated whether leaders are made, or born, and how they develop is critical for organisation change.

As Young Leaders the question Mr Johnson asked us was whether leaders can impact change with the right nurturing and mentoring. And what were the right ingredients needed for a good leader.

We learnt that there are seven types of leaders. For example, the opportunist, the diplomat, the expert, the achiever, the individualist, the

strategist and the Alchemist. What is so fascinating is that when we look at our leaders we may not see beyond what we hear or see in the media.

Mr Johnson also mentioned that there was a leader who we would be meeting and I wondered when. Little did I know that as an academy member I was going to represent other academy brothers to meet a member of the Royal Family, a leader in our society. We prepared for a long time and did not realize the visit was going to be short one. But what were my impressions?  I was struck by the friendly nature of Prince Edward.

Amidst all the preparations and the nervousness we were able to meet the Queen’s youngest son!

As we did our presentation I was nervous and wondered whether leaders feel nervous when they meet people.

I have now developed a good understanding that I do not have to be a footballer and live the life, I can aspire to be a leader one who has the ability to speak to both Kings and ordinary people. Able to deal with immediate priorities yet never lose sight of long-term goals. That I may be in the minority but still be charismatic and extremely aware of individuals who live by high moral standards and finally be focused intensely on truth and be good at creating symbols and metaphors that speak to people’s hearts and minds.

That is what I aspire to be...from a member of LYLA.
